Steps to Align Your Garage Door Opener Sensors

Aligning sensors is a precision task, but it doesn’t require specialized tools. You will typically just need a screwdriver, a tape measure, and perhaps a rag to clean the lenses.

Step 1: Clean the Lenses

Before you start loosening screws, ensure the problem isn’t just dirt. Garage floors are dusty places. Spider webs, leaves, and grime can coat the sensor lens, blocking the beam even if the alignment is perfect. Wipe both lenses gently with a soft, dry cloth.

Step 2: Loosen the Wing Nut or Screw

Locate the bracket holding the sensor to the track. Most sensors are held in place by a wing nut or a small Phillips-head screw. Loosen this just enough so that you can move the sensor by hand, but not so much that it flops around.

Step 3: The Right Way to Align Garage Door Sensors

This is often easier with two people, but can be done solo. Start with the Receiving Unit (the one with the green light).

  • Move the sensor gently up, down, left, and right.

  • Watch the LED light closely. You are looking for the position where the light glows the strongest and steadiest.

  • If you have a string, you can tie it between the two sensors to visualize the straight line path. Ideally, both sensors should be at the exact same height from the floor. Use your tape measure to verify.

Step 4: Tighten and Verify

Once you have found the “sweet spot” where the LED is solid green and not flickering, hold the sensor firmly in place and tighten the wing nut or screw. Be careful not to shift the sensor as you tighten it.

Step 5: Test the System

Press the wall button to close the door. If it closes smoothly without reversing, you have succeeded.

  • Safety Check: While the door is closing, wave a broomstick or box through the invisible beam. The door should immediately stop and reverse. This confirms the safety system is active.

Why do my sensors work in the evening but not in the morning?

This is a classic issue known as “sun blinding.” If direct sunlight hits the receiving sensor lens, it can wash out the infrared beam, making the opener think there is an obstruction. You can fix this by swapping the sides of the sensors (so the receiver is in the shade) or by constructing a small cardboard “sun visor” around the sensor lens.

Can I bypass the sensors?

No. It is illegal and unsafe to bypass safety sensors on a residential opener. If your sensors are broken, you can still close the door by pressing and holding the wall button inside the garage until the door is fully closed. This overrides the sensor for one cycle but requires you to be physically present to ensure safety.

What if the light never comes on?

If the LED on one or both sensors is completely dark, check the wiring. Trace the thin wires from the sensors back to the motor unit on the ceiling. Look for staples that might have cut the wire insulation or loose connections at the motor terminals.
